Lapis lazuli had a special symbolism since several thousand years ago due to its rarity and intense blue. It was associated with the sky, the gods, royalty and only those with a very high status could afford to wear jewelry with this rock or use small objects.

The princesses of the Sumerian city of Ur now wore necklaces of these beautiful blue stones for more than four millennia, and thousands of small statuettes of animals were discovered in the necropolises of Ur, but seals were also found.

In the early third century BCE, the Qin accomplished a series of swift conquests; the state subjugated the Chu, remnants of the Zhou Dynasty, and various other states to gain undisputed control of China.
