Lekshmi Goddess
According to 14th-century legend, two mischievous creatures called imps were sent by Satan to do evil work on Earth. After causing mayhem elsewhere in Northern England the two imps headed to Lincoln Cathedral where they smashed tables and chairs and tripped up the Bishop. An angel appeared in the Angel Choir and ordered them to stop. One of the imps sat atop a stone pillar started throwing rocks at the angel whilst the other imp cowered under the broken tables and chairs. The angel turned the first imp to stone allowing the second imp to escape. The imp that turned to stone, the Lincoln Imp, can still be found, frozen in stone, sitting atop his stone column in the Angel Choir.

I am pleased to offer here a delightful bronze bell derived from this historic legend. This is a nicely preserved example with a dark patina, complete with its original handle and clapper, cast in 17,th or 18,th century.

The bell is 2-5/8" in diameter and stands 4" in height. It weighs nearly nine ounces!

 Plagon or Kore

Bell shaped dolls inspired from archaic prototypes from Boeotia.

The plagon or glene or kore is an anthropomorphic female doll. The unique bell-shaped dolls by THETIS are inspired by 9th cent. BC archaic prototypes from Boeotia bearing similar painted decoration (some fine examples at the Louvre Museum).

The figure may be a goddess of animals, nature and life, whose first known representations date from the Bronze Age in Crete. Figures of this type were found in the graves of women and children from the 10th-8th centuries BC; they can symbolize the protective forces of nature, accompanying the deceased on their journey to the afterlife.

The original artifact is described at Musée du Louvre, (Bell idol from Thebes, 900 - 700 BC)

The technique, typology, and decoration of this figurine, known as a "bell idol", identify it as the work of Theban potters of the Late Geometric period, in ancient Boeotia. Although strictly an item of pottery, it is a rare example of figurative bells.

Tibetan prayer wheels

How and why is it used?

Prayer wheels are used by many Tibetans everyday, sometimes for hours on end. Worshippers turn prayer wheels to accumulate merit, to help all beings in the world and to purify their karma (intentional actions). They are part of a meditation practice. According to Lama Zopa, Rinpoche, “To benefit sentient beings, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifest in the prayer wheel to purify all our negative karmas and obscurations, and to cause us to actualize the realizations of the path to enlightenment.”

Turning a prayer wheel with millions of mantras inside is the equivalent of saying those millions of mantras, but it is achieved in a fraction of the time. Multiplication of benefit is also achieved by prayer wheels powered by wind and water. Whatever wind or water that touches the wheel will become blessed by the wheel and than can purify whatever else it touches of negative karma.
